Faculty at 14 Pennsylvania state universities went on strike at 5 a.m. this morning after late night contract negotiations failed to reach a deal with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. More than 100,000 students are affected by the strike. The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, APSCUF, represents about 5,500 faculty and coaches at the State System universities. Those schools include: Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania. Students at those schools were told to report to class on Wednesday, anyway, as not all teachers would choose to strike. All other services at the schools would remain open. Students are concerned, especially those close to graduation, about how long this may last and if they will be able to finish their course load on time. The union has been without a contract since June of last year. They are fighting for raises, health care, and work rules. Pennsylvania Governor Wolf released this statement.

A school bus and a passenger car were involved in an accident this morning in Newark, Delaware. It happened just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Old Baltimore Pike and Salem Church Road. A Newark Charter School bus with 39 students from 7th to 12th grades collided with a small black sedan. No one was seriously injured, only a few students complained of minor pains. Delaware police are investigating the crash.

UPDATE (10/20 12pm): Investigators say that 49-year-old Ahmad Abdullah of Wilmington ignored a red light and made a left turn in his 1999 Toyota Corolla on to Salem Church Road causing the crash. he was cited for failing to stop at a red light.

Police are investigating after a taxi driver in West Philadelphia fought off a passenger who stabbed him multiple times in the back. The entire incident was caught on the cab's surveillance video camera. The 35-year-old driver for All Threes Taxi Company picked up the man in his 20's named "James" on the 800 block of North Markoe Street around 12:45 p.m. on Sunday October 16th. He was instructed to drive to the 5800 block of Race Street. When they reached the destination, the passenger grabbed the driver by the neck. As the driver tried to break free he was stabbed several times in the back. The suspect fled north on 58th street. The driver was taken to Presbyterian Trauma Center and treated for several cuts. The suspect is described as a black male, beard, short, thin build, green hooded sweatshirt, and light colored pants. If you have any information call 215.686.TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP.
