Eagles Josh Huff Released After Arrest; Ryan Howard Option Declined; Cubs Win World Series

The Philadelphia Eagles have released wide receiver Josh Huff two days after his arrest. He was pulled over for speeding on the Walt Whitman Bridge around 11 a.m. Tuesday. He was caught with a 9mm gun, a magazine with hollow point bullets and less that 50 g of marijuana. Yesterday, Coach Doug Pederson said they would wait and see before any discipline would be handled. Today, GM Howie Roseman announced after looking at the facts they decided that he would be let go. Huff is the top kick returner in the league and has two returns for touchdowns already this year.

Huff released this statement today:

First, I want to apologize to Mr. Lurie and his family, my coaches and teammates, and all Eagles fans. I'm sorry that any action by me brought negative light to this organization. I want to thank the Lurie Family, Howie, this community and the entire Eagles organization for the opportunity I've had for the past 3 years. Most important, I want to let the fans and community as a whole know that I understand the responsibility I have as a professional athlete, and I will take all measures necessary to correct mistakes I have made.

The Ryan Howard era is officially over. As expected, the Philadelphia Phillies declined his $23-million option for 2017. Howard was paid $10 million to buy out his contract. He is now a free agent. At almost 37-years-old, Howard wants to continue to play baseball. An American League team may want to pick up a veteran power hitter for DH against righties. More likely he'll have to try and win a spot in spring training like Jimmy Rollins did with the White Sox this year. The Big Piece could find out retiring is the best option. Best of luck.

The Cubs won the World Series last night in a dramatic extra innings Game 7 in Cleveland. The 108 year drought for north siders is finally over. Congratulations are due to our local product, OF Matt Szczur of Cape May Landing, NJ. Szczur was a two sport star at Villanova setting records on the baseball diamond and bringing home the 2009 FCS National Football Championship with the Wildcats where he was MVP. He'll now have a World Series ring to show off at homecoming games.
