City officials announced today that Philadelphia schools may be seeing a change in their calendar over the next year. The Philadelphia School Reform Commission was given a proposal on Tuesday at their meeting that would bring the start day of schools up to September 5th and have school finish up on June 14th. The following 2018-2019 year would start up on August 27th, before Labor Day, and finish up as early as June 4th. The School Reform Commission will take the proposal into consideration after it was introduced on Tuesday, and will begin to vote on the reform coming in December.

Philadelphia Police are continuing to crack down on illegal dirt bike and ATV riders in the city after a serious crash that happened Monday night. The crash involved a dirt bike rider and a police cruiser, the rider crashed into the cruiser throwing him off his bike and landing him in the hospital with two broken legs and a fractured skull. A helmet cam video from one of the dirt bike riders was released on Tuesday showing them racing through the streets, swerving around cars, just moments before one of the riders was struck. The video shows the difficult balance police have to go through while stopping these riders, they must keep the streets and sidewalks safe for those using them, but also must stay cautious on not hurting those on the bikes and ATVs. Police have confiscated over 100 illegal bikes and ATVs this past year alone

An 80-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night, while firefighters were battling a fire in her Brewerytown home. Firefighters were called to the scene at around 7:20 Tuesday evening, on the 1400 block of North Hollywood Street. Once on the scene it took firefighters around 15 minutes for the fire to be successfully put out. Once it was out, firefighters searched the home only to find the 80-year-old woman who had passed away, lying on the living room floor. An ongoing investigation continues to find the cause of the fire.
