Philadelphia Councilman-at-large David Oh introduced a bill today that would create a City non-profit organization with the purpose of reimbursing teachers for classroom items and supplies. Bill #161061 would authorize City Officials to file paperwork to incorporate the non-profit to be called The Philadelphia School Teacher's Reimbursement Fund, Inc. The new organization would "reimburse personal money spent by teachers of the Philadelphia School District for the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for their classrooms." Many teachers have to use their own money to get basic supplies for their classrooms like pens, pencils, paper, markers, erasers, as well as books and other educational materials that are simply not supplied by the school district. Studies in the past few years show that on average a teacher spends $500 per year of their own money on supplies. Sometimes teachers will get donations from parents or other outside entities. Imagine if you had to bring in your own photocopy paper and staples to your workplace. The proposed Reimbursement Fund will help raise funds to put that money back into the pockets of the teachers. A police pursuit ended in a deadly crash in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night. Philadelphia police were chasing two men in connection to a shooting when the suspect's car crashed into another car carrying 55-year-old Carol Isom from Lebanon, PA. Isom was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police Commissioner Richard Ross called it a tragedy and offered his condolences. Police are looking into the chase, making sure it was following protocol, but it looks like it was legitimate. It began when the pursued car fired shots at another car. Police began to chase the shooters for about a mile before it ended in the accident. Two men were arrested and a gun was recovered. The two suspects are facing charges of homicide by vehicle, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and aggravated assault. A third man showed up to the hospital with a gunshot wound. He may have been involved in the shootout. He is not talking to police.

A Cheltenham High School teacher has been suspended for making "racially insensitive and discriminatory remarks" to students. Officials say that the teacher was discussing the impact of Donald Trump's election on the Black Lives Matter movement. She allegedly told students to stop complaining about being black. One student left the classroom in tears while others told the administration. In a statement, school district officials said that intimidation or discrimination will not be tolerated. Counseling is being provided.
