The Phillies have announced they signed former Chicago Cubs outfielder Chris Coghlan to a minor league contract. Coghlan played for the Cubs for the 2014 and 2015 season, and part of their World Series 2016 season. In 2009, Coghlan won the National League Rookie of the Year Award while he was on the then Florida Marlins. The Phillies have invited Coghlan to come to spring training in Clearwater this spring.

The Philadelphia Union have officially signed U.S. International winger Fabrice "Fafa" Picault to a one-year contract. Picault was recently released from a contract at a second-tier German club St. Pauli. Picault has scored 4 goals in 22 league games while with St. Pauli. His contract contains a club option for possibly two more seasons. Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart stated, "We are excited to bring Fafa to our club for the 2017 season. He provides depth for us and brings a lot of excitement with his speed and ability to move up and down the pitch."

Although Joel Embiid was not able to seal a spot in the as starter or a reserve on the Eastern All-Star Team, he was able to secure a spot in the Skills Challenge during the All-Star Weekend. The event showcases the players shooting, dribbling, and passing skills in a test. Embiid will take on Kristaps Porzingis, Anthony Davis, and DeMarcus Cousins.
