North Korea's Kim Jong Il is Dead; ex-Dictator's son Kim Jong-un Poised to Succeed As Leader

Kim Jong Il, the 69 year old dictator of Communist North Korea, died on Saturday. The state run network said Kim died of "overwork" while "dedicating his life to the people." And the official news agency said Kim suffered "great mental and physical strain" while on a train. There was no independent confirmation of the circumstances reported by the government, which routinely touted the seemingly mythic achievements of the "Dear Leader" during his lifetime. They did say, He suffered a heart attack on Saturday and couldn't be saved despite the use of "every possible first-aid measure".

The ruling Worker's Party proclaimed his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, "the great successor," indicating he would assume his father's post. He had been being groomed over the last year to take that role. His father promoted him to four-star General last year. Other than that, little is known about Jong-un, even his age.

South Korea's military is on "emergency alert," after the uncertainty of the leadership situation in North Korea and how the Military leadership in the North might react to Jong-un's succession and what he might do to try and consolidate power. The White House has said “We remain committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies”.
