NJ Budget Impasse Continues; Governor Christie Photographed on Beach; Kensington Robbery on Tape

The New Jersey state budget stalemate continues on Monday as the partial state government shutdown of non-essential services remains. That shutdown includes state parks, tourism offices, motor vehicle services, and more. Governor Chris Christie ordered the shutdown on Friday after lawmakers failed to approve a budget. The governor called the Legislature in to continue working on an agreement on Saturday and Sunday despite the holiday weekend. Christie and Democratic Senate President Steve Sweeney support a version of the budget that includes legislation to overhaul Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield. Democratic Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto does not. Christie has stated he will lift the shutdown as soon as a budget is delivered to his desk.

UPDATE: 7/3 11 pm: A deal has been reached that will end the budget impasse and stop the government shutdown. Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto announced a $34.7 budget deal. Gov. Chris Christie plans to sign it.

Governor Chris Christie had previously planned to spend the extended weekend with his family at the governor's summer home on Island Beach State Park, but has been traveling back and forth between the state owned house and Trenton trying to work on the budget with lawmakers. Island Beach State Park is closed to the public because of the government shutdown. Christie and his family were photographed by NJ.com from an airplane enjoying the empty beach out front of the governor's home on Sunday morning before he returned to Trenton for a news conference on Sunday afternoon. Christie defended his use of the governor's summer home while the rest of the beach was closed saying "Run for governor, and you can have the residence." In regards to the aerial photos he said, "They actually caught a politician being where he said he was going to be with the people he said he was going to be with, his wife and children and their friends. I am sure they will get a Pulitzer for this one." He tweeted on Monday that 119 of 130 miles of NJ beaches were open.

Philadelphia Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down a suspect in an armed robbery in Kensington last week who was caught on camera. It happened just after 11 a.m. on Thursday June 29th on the 2400 block of Memphis Street. The suspect entered the store and asked for a cup of water. While the 20-year-old female employee was distracted he walked around the counter, took out a knife, and threatened to stab her. The man proceeded to take an undisclosed amount of cash from the register before fleeing. He is described as a white male, 30-40 years-of-age, thin build, wearing a black hat, black t-shirt, and dark colored shorts. If you have any information contact Philadelphia Police.
