Fire and CO leak in West Chester; Molotov Cocktail Thrown at Deputy; Drunk Drives to Police Station

Several firefighters in West Chester were injured and residents and businesses had to be evacuated because of a fire and carbon monoxide leak. Smoke was first reported around 4 p.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of West Gay Street. PECO said an underground transformer caused the electrical fire. Once the fire was placed under control, elevated levels of carbon monoxide were detected. Twelve firefighters were evaluated for exposure, five of them had to be taken to area hospitals for treatment. None of the injuries were serious. Only West Chester Assistant Fire Chief Mark Scanlon remains in the hospital. He should be released tomorrow. The 100 and 200 blocks of Gay Street had been evacuated while the fire department continued to check CO levels. Residents were allowed to return around 8 p.m. Authorities are trying to determine the cause of the fire.

A Delaware County Sheriff Deputy was burned by a suspect while trying to serve a warrant on Wednesday afternoon in Collingdale. Police arrived on the unit block of McDade Boulevard after 4:30 p.m. to serve the warrant. When they knocked on the door the suspect threw a lit Molotov Cocktail which exploded on the officer. The deputy suffered second degree burns to his upper leg and foot. He was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center. Police remained at the scene with guns drawn until the suspect eventually surrendered around 5:30 p.m. When police searched the house they discovered about a half dozen more Molotov Cocktails ready to be lit and thrown.

Upper Darby police say that an intoxicated man drove himself to the police station and admitted to officers that he was drunk. Early on Wednesday morning, 44-year-old Sean McCullough tried to drive through the automatic gate blocking the driveway at the Upper Darby Township Police building on West Chester Pike. He then proceeded to drive up the curb and around the gate before parking in the lot. Officers inside saw him on security monitors and went outside to meet him. "I've never seen anybody who's drunk come to the police station looking for a safe place", said Upper Darby Police Chief Michael Chitwood. Police tried to administer a field sobriety test but McCullogh could barely stand. Chitwood says. "They ask him if he's drinking, he said he wasn't sure if he was in Philly or Trenton - he had 12 to 14 beers." He told officers, "I'm hammered, I'm hammered, I'm hammered, I'm drunk, I'm drunk, I'm drunk." So they locked him up.
