Serious Charges Dropped in Penn State Hazing Case; Olney Hit-Run; Missing Temple Student

A judge has dismissed the most serious charges against members of a Penn State fraternity in the alcohol-fueled hazing death of a pledge last school year. District Justice Allen Sinclair threw out the charges of involuntary manslaughter and felony aggravated assault. He also dropped all charges against four of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity members. The remaining charges range from alcohol violations and hazing to reckless endangerment. Fourteen men will now head to trial. Two had previously waived the preliminary hearing. That hearing took an unusually long 7 days in a Centre County courtroom as all the defendants and their lawyers were present. District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller plans on appealing the ruling. On the night of February 2nd, 19-year-old sophomore Timothy Piazza participated in a pledging ritual where pledges were forced to drink heavily. Around 11 p.m., he fell head first down a flight of basement stairs. He was carried up and placed on a couch. Video cameras in the house show that Piazza repeatedly got up and fell down with members of the house offering little assistance through out the night. An ambulance was finally called about 12 hours after the initial fall down the stairs. He died the next day in the hospital.

Philadelphia Police have located the vehicle connected to a hit-and-run accident in Olney that killed a teenage bicyclist. It happened at 11:45 p.m. Thursday at C and East Ashdale streets. 19-year-old Lorenzo Velazquez was riding his bike south on C Street when he was hit by a white car going west on Ashdale Street. Velazquez was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. Police located the car, a 2006 white Honda sedan, on the 500 block of West Duncannon Street. The owner of the car is being questioned as a person of interest, but no arrests have been made at this point.
