Insects Invade Philadelphia Area, Flying Ants Swarm?; Rollie Massimino Funeral Tues. Live Stream

The Philadelphia area was overcome by a swarm of insects this evening. Citizens took to Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit to report the unusual amount of flying bugs in their neighborhoods. Reports came from South Philly, Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Center City, Old City, Montgomery County, Bucks County, South Jersey and more. They were described as gnats or maybe flying ants. Flying ants swarm at the same time to mate before flying off to start new colonies. Others theorized the bugs could have been fleeing Hurricane Irma. Whatever the case, most would agree it was gross and now dead bugs are everywhere.

A viewing was held on Monday night for former Villanova University head basketball coach Rollie Massimino. Massimino died on August 30th after a battle with lung cancer. Friends, family, alumni, and former players paid respects at St. Thomas of Villanova Church on campus. The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the church. The funeral will be streamed live. Watch Rollie Massimino Funeral Live. In lieu of flowers friends are asked to make an offering in Massimino’s name to either Coaches vs. Cancer (P.O. Box 42040, Oklahoma City, Ok., 73123) or the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation (1513 Race Street, Philadelphia, Pa., 19013).

Philadelphia Police are searching for a man caught on surveillance video firing multiple shots into a North Philadelphia home while a woman was inside. It happened at 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5th on the 200 block of West Thayer Street. The suspect got out of the passenger side of a car and walked up to the house. He tried to shoot the weapon but it didn't work at first. He started to walk back to the car when he seemed to figure it out. He turned around and went back to the house and opened fire on the front of the house. The suspect then got in the car and the driver took off. The woman was in another room at the time when she heard the shots. When she entered the living room she saw bullet holes in the window and walls. The shooter was caught on the same surveillance camera outside the home earlier in the day. If you have any information call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP or 773847.
