Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

January 16th is a day we honor one of the most influential people in the nation's history. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for our nation's civil rights more than 50 years ago.

Last year, more than 75,000 volunteers participated in more than 1,200 projects in the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

This year's celebration could be even bigger.

This is the signature site for the Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service and more than 3,000 volunteers are expected. The events get started at 8:00 a.m. with a Wellness Fair, Civic Engagement Expo and Kids’ Carnival. There are tons of activities for children including arts and crafts, games, dance and music.

City Year’s “A Day ON, Not a Day OFF” is the organization’s largest day of service and inspires a life-long interest in community service. More than 1,200 volunteers will be sprucing up Germantown High and Pastorius Elementary. Activities will include painting and landscaping; there will also be a carnival and kids’ station where children can volunteer with their parents.

Villanova’s fifth Martin Luther King Day of Service, in partnership with Michelle Obama‘s Let’s Move Campaign, is student-driven and encompasses 25 sites in Philadelphia with beautification, tutoring, and reading projects slated. Volunteers will be notified of their assigned sites and a free lunch will be provided to all.

The historical society will be celebrating King sharing his life’s stories, showing videos of his speeches, together with kids’ crafts. Donations are gladly accepted. Refreshments will be served and the John Chads House will be open for tours.

Har Zion will be honoring Martin Luther King Day with such service projects as collecting non-perishables for the Community Food Bank in Narbreth, knitting clothes for shelters, and gathering outfits for Women’s Career Wardrobe and shoes for its “Soles for Souls” venture.
