Asplundh To Pay $95 Million in DOJ Case; Mother/Son Arrested for Shoplifting; PA Supreme Court Rules

A Montgomery County, Pennsylvania-based company pled guilty in federal court today to hiring thousands of undocumented immigrants. Asplundh Tree Expert Co. of Willow Grove was ordered to pay a record $95 million in fines for an immigration case, an $80 millioan criminal forfeiture money judgment and a $15 million civil payment. Asplundh is a 90-year-old company that employs 30,000 people in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They are best known for tree trimming around power lines and utilities. The company was accused of not only hiring but rehiring workers who returned with different but still false identification. "The highest levels of Asplundh management remained willfully blind while lower level managers hired and rehired employees they knew to be ineligible to work in the United States," said the U.S. Attorney. Asplundh has since changed its hiring practices. "We accept responsibility for the charges as outlined, and we apologize to our customers, associates and all other stakeholders for what has occurred," Chairman and CEO Scott Asplundh said in Asplundh's Statement on the DOJ Matter posted on their website.

A mother and son were arrested at a South Jersey Walmart for attempting a robbery scheme. 58-year-old Donna Hall and 30-year-old Nicholas Hall were taken into custody in Egg Harbor Township on Tuesday. Donna Hall claimed that her granddaughter was missing. However, the girl did not exist, it was simply a plot to distract employees so her son could shoplift. Officers quickly determined there was no granddaughter and stopped the plot.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling today that could have an effect on how public education is funded in the state. The court ruled 5-2 to overturn a 2015 Commonwealth Court decision. This now opens up the courts to hear questions about public education funding and rule on their constitutionality. The original ruling and those in dissent argue that matters of education funding are complex and political and better handled in the General Assembly. The original plaintiffs included several school districts including William Penn School District in Delaware County.
