Philadelphia Sheriff's Trans Policy; Head-on Crash on MLK Drive; NJ School Closes for Mold

The Philadelphia Sheriff's Office has a new policy for transporting, searching, and housing transgender individuals. Sheriff Jewell Williams says, "What we want to do is make sure everybody’s rights are protected." Inmates will still be processed based on the gender printed on their government ID but a transgender person may fill out a "Transgender/Gender-Variant Statement of Search" form. The form will include their gender identity or expression, preferred name/pronouns, and a preference for the gender of the officer who will search them. Officers will use this information to refer to the inmate while in custody. Also, transgender males will be transported with cisgender males and transgender females will be transported with cisgender females. Transgender inmates will be housed individually when possible. This policy includes both pre and post-operative individuals. Read the Philadelphia Sheriff's policy here.

Today, United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memo saying that federal civil rights laws do not protect transgender people from discrimination at work. However, Sessions clarified, "The Justice Department must and will continue to affirm the dignity of all people, including transgender individuals.”

A head-on crash closed parts of Martin Luter King Drive (West River Drive) in Fairmount Park this morning. Two people were injured when the two cars slammed head-on around 8 a.m. The cars had serious damage to their front bumbers. The two injured were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

Last night, the Board of Education of Monroe Township School District voted to close Holly Glen Elementary temporarily after mold was discovered throughout the building. The announcement came at a tense school board meeting. Superintendent Chuck Earling said the closure was effective immediately and would last at least three weeks. They have hired a professional cleaning company to decontaminate the entire building. The 527 students will be sent to other schools in the district. Parents addressing the board were very upset. They asked why the school wasn't tested earlier despite previous complaints. Other parents were concerned about their children who have been sick. There is no timeline for the remediation, it could take weeks or months.
