Yuengling is now the Largest American Brewery

D.G. Yuengling and Son, based in Pottsville, PA, has become the largest domestically owned brewery, passing Sam Adams maker Boston Beer. Last year, Yuengling's shipments rose 16.9% to 2.5 million barrels, where Boston Beer only rose 8% to 2.4 million barrels.

What about the #1 beer in the USA, Bud Light? Well that's made by Anheuser-Busch, which is owned by Belgium based Anheuser-Busch InBev. The #2 beer is Coors Light made by MillerCoors, but that's owned by London based SABMiller and Molson Coors in Montreal and Denver. That is a shake up too, regular Budweiser was usually in the #2 spot.

Anyway you look at it, the American beer industry is seeing foreign control over most of it's beer production. Yuengling is only 8th overall on the list at 1.2% of consumption by volume. American's don't seem to mind, notice or even care.

2012 should be another good one for Yuengling as they move into their 14th state in Ohio. America's oldest brewery, family owned, and now the largest. More and more people will be ordering the beer known by it's generic name... "lager".
