Symphony for a Broken Orchestra to play 1,000 Broken Philly School District Instruments

The School District of Philadelphia owns over 1,000 instruments that are broken and unplayable. Unfortunately they do not have the funds to fix any of the instruments that are still not beyond repair. Symphony for a Broken Orchestra is a "city-wide effort initiated by Temple Contemporary in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Boyer College of Music & Dance, the Curtis Institute and numerous professional/amateur musicians throughout the city." Each of those broken instruments was individually recorded and a sound library was created of their broken sounds. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang took that sound library and created a unique composition for those instruments. 400 musicians will perform that one of a kind composition this Sunday, December 3rd at the 23rd Street Armory.

The goal of the project to to raise awareness about music education in Philadelphia's public schools, repair the broken instruments, and to help the school district sustain its music programs. Following the show, Temple Contemporary will work with professionals to repair all of the fixable instruments and return them to their original schools. Instrument repair kits will also go out to all schools with music programs so that simple repairs and maintenance can be kept up.
