Dr. James Kauffman, accused of hiring a hitman to kill his wife and running a pill mill from his New Jersey doctor's office, appeared in court on Thursday via video. Kauffman was already in custody. He had previously been arrested on weapons charges when agents attempted to serve search warrants on his Egg Harbor Township doctor's office in June 2017 and he pulled a gun. Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner revealed that James Kauffman himself may be the target of a hit and that he had been moved from the Atlantic County Jail in Mays Landing to the Hudson County Jail in Kearney. Kauffman's codefendant, Ferdinand Augello, has additionally been charged with conspiracy to commit murder of the doctor. April Kauffman was shot to death in her home in May 2012. She had threatened to expose a drug distribution ring set up between Dr. Kauffman and the Pagan Outlaw Motorcycle Club if she didn't get a favorable divorce settlement. Francis Mullholland was hired to kill April for $20,000. Mullholland died of a drug overdose 18 months later. The drug operation continued until last year when the office was raided.

A 13-hour standoff between an armed suspect and police in Gloucester Township, NJ, ended with the gunman dead. It started around 8 p.m. Wednesday when police responded to the report of shots fired. The man barricaded himself inside a townhome near Hampshire and Yorkshire roads in the Brittany Woods neighborhood of Sicklerville. The 24-year-old suspect opened fire on police and armored vehicles and shot more than 15 rounds. Police never returned fire. Authorities were in contact with the man via phone but when he stopped responding on Thursday morning they decided to go in. The SWAT team entered around 9 a.m. They found the man dead with a handgun and rifle nearby. A female resident was also found inside unharmed. She was taken in for questioning. Area school districts cancelled classes on Thursday. 18 residents from 10 nearby homes were evacuated and a shelter-in-place was declared for the neighborhood. All of that has been lifted. No police were injured.

A Bucks County woman was arrested for leaving a backpack with 10,000 packets of heroin in the parking lot of a Bensalem Township middle school. 26-year-old Natasha Willis of Bensalem is charged with possession with intent to deliver narcotics and related offenses. On the morning of December 20th, a backpack containing four bricks of heroin, already packaged for sale in baggies, was found outside of Cecilia Snyder Middle School in Bensalem. That's worth approximately $100,000 on the street. Police reviewed surveillance footage from the school for clues as to who left the bag. They noticed a tan Toyota Corolla with New Jersey registration near where the bag was found. At around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday January 10th, Bensalem police pulled over that vehicle and arrested Willis. She admitted the bag was hers and that she accidentally placed it outside her vehicle behind the school. She is charged with possession with intent to deliver and related offenses. She is being held at Bucks County Correctional Facility with bail set at 10 percent of $750,000.
