U.S. Marshal Shot/Killed in Harrisburg; Philadelphia 1 of 20 Amazon Finalists; Bicyclist Struck

A U.S. Marshal was shot and killed and two police officers were injured while serving an arrest warrant in Harrisburg, PA on Thursday morning. It happened around 6:30 a.m. on the 1800 block of Mulberry Street in a residential area of the state capital. The task force had entered the home and handcuffed the arrest suspect Shayla Lynette Towles Pierce when a man on the second floor opened fire on the officers. Deputy U.S. Marshal Christopher David Hill and two other local officers were hit by the gun fire. The officers returned fire and critically injured the shooter. 45-year-old Hill died a short time later at the hospital. He was an 11-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals and an Army Veteran. He is survived by a wife and two children.

UPDATE: The shooter has been identified as 31-year-old Kevin Sturgis of Philadelphia. Sturgis had two active warrants from Philadelphia. Failure to appear for a firearms charge and one for not appearing for a probation hearing on a receiving stolen property, possession of controlled substance and unauthorized use of an automobile charges.

Amazon announced its list of 20 finalist cities out of 238 that submitted proposals to host the online retail company's second headquarters. Philadelphia has made it to Round 2 and is still in the running to land this lucrative economic prize. Amazon's second headquarters promises to create 50,000 jobs and $5 billion in construction spending and infrastructure improvements. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said, "Philadelphia's inclusion in Amazon's Top 20 potential locations for HQ2 is an exciting milestone for the city. We are thrilled at today's announcement, and look forward to working with Amazon's team on the next steps of this process to further highlight all that Philadelphia has to offer." The majority of the finalists are concentrated on East Coast and Mid West. Here is the list of 20 Amazon finalists: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, OH, Dallas, Denver, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Montgomery County, MD, Nashville, New York City, Newark, NJ, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, NC, Toronto, Washington, D.C.

A bicyclist was hit in West Philadelphia around noon on Thursday. It happened at the intersection of 63rd and Vine streets. The driver of a red SUV remained at the scene. The rider was transported to Lankenau Medical Center. Police are trying to determine was caused the crash.
