According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, 68-year-old Dr. James Kauffman was found dead in his cell this morning of an apparent suicide. Kauffman is charged with arranging the murder of his wife and running a pill mill out of his office. He was found in his Hudson County Correctional Center cell this morning around 9:20 a.m. He apparently used a strip of his bedsheet to kill himself while his cell mate was out at court. He left a six-page note. Kauffman was accused of hiring a hitman to kill his wife, April Kauffman, in May 2012 because she threatened to expose the lucrative drug ring he was operating with the Pagan motorcycle club. Dr. Kauffman, himself, also became the target of death threats and was moved from the Atlantic County Jail for his protection. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office released this statement, "The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office can confirm that we were notified by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office that James Kauffman died in an apparent suicide on Friday morning, January 26, 2018. The investigation is continuing and we will have no further comment at this time."

A Hamilton Township police officer was nearly hit by a passing vehicle during a traffic stop last week in Atlantic County and it was caught on dash cam video. It happened on January 19th on Harding Highway. The video shows the patrol car pulling off the road behind a vehicle. As the officer prepares to exit his car, the video shows the rear view with a fast approaching car. The view switches back to the front camera as the officer is exiting and just barely gets out of the way as the passing vehicle side swipes the patrol car. Police want to remind drivers of the Move Over Law. For any stationary emergency or authorized vehicle you should change lanes, if possible, or slow down and proceed slowly and carefully, and be prepared to stop.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has announced that Rev. Monsignor Gregory J. Parlante has been arrested on drug and theft charges. Parlante had most recently been the pastor at St. Cornelius Church in Chadds Ford, Delaware County, but took a leave of absence for health reasons beginning in March 2017. The drug investigation began in May 2017 when a package addressed to Msgr. Parlante, believed to contain drugs, was opened by parish staff. The type or amount of drugs is unknown. Staff reported the package to law enforcement and Pennsylvania State Police executed a search warrant. It was also discovered that $5,500 were taken from Sunday collections from January 2017 - March 2017. Both the parish and Archdiocese have cooperated with the investigation. Parlante wrote in the Sunday bulletin back in May, "For the past few years my heath was not totally recovered from my near-death illness," he said. "In March I began a medical leave to address my health issues. I asked the archbishop to accept my resignation as pastor so that I can totally devote my time to becoming well." Parlante has been a priest for 35 years and past at St. Cornelius for 13 years. He has been charged with knowing or intentional possession of a controlled substance, use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia and one felony charge of theft by unlawful taking or disposition.
