Industry Optimism Prevails at the Philadelphia Auto Show

The Philadelphia International Auto Show runs through February 5th at the Convention Center and car dealers are optimistic that the strong year-end sales finish will carry over into 2012.

The Philly Auto Show will feature innovative new 2012 models and manufacturers are banking on improved consumer confidence. “Each manufacturer feels like it’s ripe for market share, so there’s an onslaught of new models, something like 13 new models. There is optimism,” said Kevin Mazzucola, executive director of the Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia, which represents 190 dealerships. “The consumer is resilient. We need improvement on unemployment, but there’s better credit out there. Leasing is back. The bottom line is things are better — not great, but very positive.”

From Jan. 28-Feb. 5, the Auto Show will showcase 700 vehicles from 40 manufacturers at the expanded Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The show will cover 600,000 square feet and, for the first time, include an indoor “ride and drive” area, hosted by Toyota. The show typically attracts 225,000 people.

Dealers are bolstered by projections for continued sales growth this year — a relief after some rocky years in the recession. After posting record numbers in 2005 and 2006, with 17 million vehicles sold nationwide, the numbers plummeted in 2009 to 10.4 million vehicles.
