Stotesbury Cup Moving to Cooper River; Pepper Spray in NJ High School; Temple Frat ex-Pres Arrested

The Stotesbury Cup Regatta, scheduled for this weekend, has made the last minute call and will be going over the Ben Franklin Bridge to Camden for this year. It has been held on the Schuylkill River every year but one other (Delaware R. late 80s) since 1927. Race organizers decided they had to move to the Cooper River due to safety concerns. All the rain the area has been getting and is forecast to get the rest of the week is causing the Schuylkill to rise and run fast. It is too dangerous to race on. The regatta is one of the largest in the world, if not the largest for high schools, so moving an event of this size is a logistical challenge given the timeframe. 195 schools have entered with 975 boats and 6,000 rowers from across the country and Canada. It also attracts 35,000 spectators over the two days. Everything has to be changed from rerouting the teams, hotels, portable docks, tents, food vendors, shuttle vans, toilets, sponsors, etc. To stay up-to-date on the latest go to https://stotesburycupregatta.com

Over two dozen students had to be taken to the hospital on Wednesday, 5/16, after being exposed to pepper spray in their Burlington County, NJ, high school. It happened around 12:45 p.m. in the cafeteria of Burlington County Institute of Technology in Medford. A student discharged a small pepper spray canister. 34 students were evaluated by first responders. Those affected showed signs such as teary eyes, coughing, and vomiting. 26 students were transported to local hospitals to be treated. Police are investigating the incident and are determining if it was intentional or accidental.

The former president of a suspended Temple University fraternity has been arrested following multiple reports of sexual assault happening at the fraternity this past winter. 21-year-old Ari Goldstein of Wrightstown, PA, is charged with attempted rape, attempted involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, intimidation, attempted sexual assault, indecent assault, simple assault, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment. He is being held on 10% of $2 million bail. Two 19-year-old female Temple students told police in April that they were sexually assaulted inside the Alpha Epsilon Pi house at Broad and Norris street after attending a party and blacking out shortly after given drinks. The first incident happened in February and the other in March. A third female has also come forward. The fraternity vows to cooperate with the investigation. A spokesman said, “We believe in due process but there is clearly no place for this behavior in our organization and, if proven true, I would expect him to be permanently expelled from our fraternity.”
