Vice President Mike Pence in Philly; 2nd Suspect Charged in Trenton; PA State Troopers Get Body Cams

Vice President Mike Pence will be in Philadelphia tonight for a GOP fundraising event. The VP will be speaking at the Republican Governor's Association event held in Rittenhouse Square this evening. Protestors plan to demonstrate their opposition to the "zero-tolerance" immigration policy starting around 5 p.m. The current administration's policy and US immigration law are forcing the separation of families as large numbers illegally cross the southern border. Congress is working this week on immigration reform, but President Trump could also reverse his strict policy and stop most of this family separation. Under the current policy, all incoming illegal immigrants are automatically being referred for criminal prosecution and detained for the misdemeanor border crossing. Children cannot be detained with their parents in the same facility so they are removed and sheltered elsewhere. Previously, most people who were caught were simply released or deported.

A 2nd suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting at the Trenton arts festival this past weekend that left 22 injured. Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri announced on Tuesday, 6/19, that 26-year-old Davone White is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, certain persons not to possess a weapon and possession of a large capacity magazine. White remains in the hospital in stable condition. The shooting happened at the Roebling Wire Works Building on the 600 block of South Clinton Avenue around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, 6/17, during the Arts All Night festival. Fights between rival neighborhood gangs broke out just before the gunfire. Police returned fire. 17 were injured by the gun fire, 5 were injured in the ensuing melee. Police have already arrested 23-year-old Amir "Mir" Armstrong. He is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. 33-year-old Tahaij Wells was shot and killed by police. He had just recently been paroled on homicide-related charges. There were around 1,000 people in the area at the time. The venue did not have metal detectors.

Some Pennsylvania State Troopers will begin to wear body cameras in a pilot program to last through the end of the year. Acting Commissioner Robert Evanchick said that patrol troopers in Troop B in Uniontown, Troop J in Avondale, and Troop T in Somerset will deploy the cameras while on duty. The state police received a $52,000 federal grant to buy about 30 of the cameras. The grant is also to develop policy and training of the use body cams. Pennsylvania police audio and video recordings are exempt from the state's Right-to-Know Law, but can be released at the discretion of police.
