A black baby doll was found hanging from a noose tied to an overhead wire in a Philadelphia playground on Thursday afternoon. The incident was initially investigated as a possible hate crime. However, it turns out a group of pre-teen boys had done it as a prank to 'creep people out.' They were unaware of the historical context of the lynching imagery. It happened at the Weccacoe Playground at 4th and Queen streets in the city’s Queen Village section. The location is the former burial ground for Mother Bethel AME Church. The boys came forward and explained they had found the baby doll and rope in the park and just wanted to scare people. Surveillance video from the park corroborates the boys' story. "Some young children came forward and confessed that they actually did it. Believe it or not these children were under the age of 13. They were black and they were white and they live here in the neighborhood," said Rev. Mark Tyler.

When the doll was first discovered, many members of the community quickly gathered to condemn the possible hate speech. Mayor Kenny and Police Commissioner Richard Ross spoke strongly against it. "This is the type of behavior that happens that makes you sick, particularly in this day and age and in this city," said Commissioner Ross. "We’re gonna find you. We’re going to use all the resources we can to find you," said Ross.

"Although the investigation is still underway, I want to immediately condemn this despicable act. It demonstrates how far this country has fallen when people are inspired by the hateful rhetoric of our President. And it is particularly disgraceful to make a sacrilege out of a sacred burial ground, where thousands of African Americans are interred. The City will do everything in its power to bring the people responsible to justice for this disgusting act," Kenney said in a statement. The Fraternal Order of Police was offering a $5,000 reward.

A two-year-old boy has died from his injuries after several pit bulls attacked him in his Philadelphia home on Wednesday evening, 8/1. It happened around 5:20 p.m. on the 3000 block of Agate Street in Port Richmond. Police arrived and saw the small child on the living room floor being attacked by the dogs. They opened fire, killing one and injuring 2 dogs. Officers fired 7 shots in total. The unconscious boy was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children with severe wounds and was pronounced dead at 6:05. The child's 23-year-old aunt, who was babysitting, was also injured while trying to protect him. There were a total of five dogs in the home, two of which stayed in their cages. Animal control removed all the dogs from the home. The Special Victims Unit is investigating possible reckless endangerment or child endangerment charges.

Police have arrested a second suspect in connection to the attempted rape and robbery of an 82-year-old West Philadelphia woman last month. 30-year-old Raheem White of Folcroft was taken into custody on Wednesday night. 23-year-old Darius Johnson of East Lansdowne was arrested on Monday, 7/30. The two are accused of breaking in to a home on the 6000 block of Sansom Street on July 19th. They wore towels on their heads to hide their identity. They attacked the women and attempted to sexually assault her but stopped when she resisted. They proceeded to take cash and other items from her home. They are charged with Attempted Rape, Burglary, Robbery, Simple Assault, Risking a Catastrophe, Conspiracy and related charges.
