Widespread Flash Flooding in Delaware Valley; Aretha Franklin 'Gravely Ill'; NJ Law Mandates Recess

Recent heavy rainfall combined with downpours on Monday caused widespread flash flooding across the Delaware Valley this morning, 8/13, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Emergency responders were kept extremely busy making water rescues of motorists, pedestrians, and even pets. The flood waters not only impacted small streams and neighborhood roads, but also the large thoroughfares causing complete closures on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Schuylkill Expressway. Many roadways quickly turned into waterways catching drivers off guard. Onlookers flooded social media with pictures and video of their streets and neighborhoods inundated by the rain. Flash Flood Watches and Warnings including River Flood Watches and Warnings are posted through early Wednesday morning. There is more rain in the forecast for Tuesday. Any downpour from a thunderstorm could quickly turn into a flash flood. Be careful when driving, and never attempt to drive through any amount of water.

Legendary singer Aretha Franklin, "The Queen of Soul," is reportedly 'gravely ill' and currently in hospice care at her Detroit home surrounded by family (CNN). The family is asking for prayers and privacy. 76-year-old Franklin's last public performance was last August 2017 at the Mann Center in Philadelphia. She performed for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York in Novermber 2017. Franklin is known for hits like "Respect," "Think," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and "Chain of Fools." She has won 18 Grammy awards.

A new measure signed into law in New Jersey now mandates recess for all young children. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed the measure on Friday, 8/10, that requires 20 minutes a day of recess for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The break from schoolwork should be held outside if possible. Recess helps students cultivate social skills, encourages physical exercise, and improves their readiness to learn. Under the law, recess cannot be denied for any reason unless the student has violated the school's code of conduct. The law goes into effect immediately for the approaching school year.
