Hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah was announced as this year's Marian Anderson Award recipient. The Marian Anderson Award honors critically acclaimed artists who have impacted society in a positive way, either through their work or their support for an important cause. This is the 20th year the award has been given. The ceremony will be held at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on November 20th.

"I'm honored to announce that the recipient of this year's Marian Anderson Award will be Queen Latifah," said Mayor Jim Kenny during a press conference. "Queen Latifah is someone who can do it all. She is a musician, an actress, a media mogul, an author and an entrepreneur. Queen Latifah has broken down barriers in the music industry and has shown the world that a female entertainer can be just as successful as any man. And that's not all, she is also very active in the community and supports a number of worthwhile causes."

Past winners include Harry Belafonte, Gregory Peck, Dame Elizabeth Taylor, Quincy Jones, Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Sidney Poitier, Richard Gere, Maya Angelou and Norman Lear, Mia Farrow, James Earl Jones, Berry Gordy, Jon Bon Jovi and Wynton Marsalis.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied a motion from Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, aka Robert Rihmeek Williams, on Tuesday, 8//21, to remove a judge from his case and overturn her decision to deny him a new trial. Lawyers for the entertainer argue that Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Genece Brinkley has been biased in her handling of Mill's decade long case. They also argued that the arresting officer in Mill's underlying 2007 arrest lied under oath. Mill's attorneys must now go through the regular process of appealing the ruling and go down to Superior Court. Meek Mill is scheduled to perform next week at the Made in America Festival over Labor Day weekend on the Ben Franklin Parkway.
