25-year-old Brian Smart of Hatboro collapsed just after the 8-mile mark of the 10-mile Broad Street Run on Sunday morning, 5/5. He had suffered a heart attack and was transferred to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he passed away. Smart was currently employed at Upper Darby High School in Delaware County as an athletic trainer for multiple sports. He has worked at several other high schools and colleges in the area. He attended Temple University for Athletic Training. Smart ran track and cross country at La Salle College High School from 2009-2012. He is one of seven siblings and had just moved into a new apartment with his fiance. Frank Nunan, Upper Darby athletic director, said that Smart was in great shape. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the cause of death. This is the third time someone died while running the Broad Street Run since it started in 1980.

Police in Burlington County say that an argument between two roommates ended with one stabbed to death and the other behind bars. It happened mid-afternoon Monday, 5/6, at East 4th Street and High Street in Burlington. Police found the roommate dead outside. They arrested the other roommate at the scene and will go to court on Tuesday. Neither have been identified.

A citizen with a permit to carry shot a man in West Philadelphia who was terrorizing the neighborhood Monday evening, 5/6. It happened just before 6 p.m. on the unit block of North 57th Street. A 43-year-old man, who may have been under the influence, was behaving erraticly. The man was punching cars and people. He was also breaking vehicle windows with a rock. A 25-year-old man confronted him to stop, but was punched himself. The younger man then shot the older man in the leg. Police saw the shooting happen as they responded to the reports of the out of control man. The shooting victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The younger man has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. No charges have been filed at this time. The incident looks like self defense, but it is still under investigation.
