Eagles place Franchise Tag on DeSean Jackson

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially placed the franchise tag on Wide Receiver and Returner DeSean Jackson. The franchise tag is worth $9.4 million for a wideout in 2012. That is equal to the average of the 5 highest paid players at his position. Jackson becomes the first NFL player to be given a franchise tag this year.

"We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that," GM Howie Roseman said in a statement released by the Eagles. "DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It's our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him."

Giving a player a franchise tag usually is a predecessor for working out a long term deal. It is usually given to players of great skill or high importance to a team that are becoming unrestricted free agents. Each team is only given one tag per year to designate a franchise player. The Eagles want to work out a long term deal with DeSean, despite having a less than stellar year in 2011. Signing him under the franchise tag will give them exclusive negotiating rights over the next year.
