Hahnemann University Hospital Closes Trauma Center; 4 Gunman Invade Home; Arrest in Playground Arson

Hahnemann University Hospital says it is no longer accepting trauma patients, however, the emergency room will remain open for now. The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation says they were notified of Hahnemann's decision on Friday night, 6/28. The de-designation as a Level 1 and Level 2 trauma center is effective immediately. Hahnemann's Charles C. Wolferth Trauma Center was completed in 1986. It was Philadelphia's first designated-Level I Trauma Center for adults. This comes just days after Philadelphia Academic Health System announced that it would be closing the 171-year-old hospital due to continuing and unsustainable financial losses. The Pennsylvania Department of Health then sent a "cease and desist" letter to the hospital ordering it to remain open until there could be an approved closure plan, especially as 4th of July celebrations start throughout the city.

"After reviewing our plan of closure and in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, we felt this move is in the best interest of patient safety," Dr. Alexander E. Trebelev, Chief Medical Officer at Hahnemann, said in statement released Saturday afternoon. "Unfortunately, we are facing clinical and operational challenges. We cannot continue to serve trauma and STEMI patients under these conditions."

Ron Dreskin, Interim CEO of Philadelphia Academic Health Systyem, the parent company of Hahnemann said, "We realize the impact this move, and the closure of Hahnemann has on the city of Philadelphia and surrounding neighborhoods, and most importantly, our staff. We wish there could have been a more positive outcome for all. In spite of our best efforts and meetings with numerous city, state, union, insurance carrier and university officials, a financial solution could not be achieved."

Philadelphia Police are looking for 4 masked gunmen that attacked and robbed a family during a home invasion in West Philadelphia early Saturday morning, 6/29. It happened just before 3 a.m. in a home located above the Golden Palace Chinese Restaurant on the 5800 block of Cedar Avenue. The family of five, including two parents and three children, were all home. The 55-year-old man and 42-year-old woman were assaulted. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The children were not injured. The intruders made off with several thousand dollars. No arrests have been made.

A man and a teenager have been arrested on Thursday, 6/27, for setting a playground on fire in Pine Hill, NJ. 21-year-old Christian Taunitas and a 16-year-old boy were taken into custody. The fire happened around 2 a.m. last Saturday at the Charles Bowen Recreational Complex. They also created dangerous conditions at the nearby John H. Glenn Elementary School. The complex was only 3 years old. The fire caused $75,000 worth of damage. The teen was charged with arson, conspiracy to commit arson, criminal mischief, failure to control or report a dangerous fire, and defiant trespassing related to the playground fire. He also was charged with criminal trespassing and creating a dangerous condition for the school fire. Taunitas is charged with conspiracy to commit arson, failure to control or report a dangerous fire, and defiant trespassing related to the playground fire. He has been charged with criminal trespassing and creating a dangerous condition related to the elementary school fire.
