Superior Court Grants Meek Mill New Trial; Man Sentenced 25-50 years; NJ Walmart Bomb Threat

Philadelphia raper Meek Mill, aka Robert Rihmeek Williams, will get a new trial after his 2008 conviction on drug and weapons offenses was overturned by a Pennsylvania appeals court on Wednesday, 7/24. The Pennsylvania Superior Court 3-judge panel unanimously granted the new trial after being presented with new evidence of alleged police corruption. The original arresting officer and sole prosecution witness, former Philadelphia Police Officer Reginald Graham, has credibility issues acknowledged even by the District Attorney's office. The prosecution will not call him again at a new trial. "We conclude the after-discovered evidence is of such a strong nature and character that a different verdict will likely result at a retrial," the judges' opinion said. Graham testified that Mill pointed a gun at officers, which aggravated the charges. Mill has said he had a gun but didn't point it at police. This decision also wipes out Mill's ongoing probation and in particular a November 2017 probation violation conviction. Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley sentenced the rapper to 2-4 years for technical parole violations. The Superior Court has also removed Judge Brinkley, who longtime handling of the case has been called controversial. It is not known if the Philadelphia District Attorney's office will elect to retry the case.

Meek Mill released the the following statement:
"I'd like to thank the Pennsylvania Superior Court judges for their wisdom and transparency in reviewing my case, unanimously overturning my conviction and granting me a new trial. The past 11 years have been mentally and emotionally challenging, but I'm ecstatic that justice prevailed. This positive outcome wouldn't have been possible without the support of my family, my attorneys, JAY-Z, Desiree Perez, Michael Rubin, the Philadelphia District Attorney's office and my supporters who have stood with me through the ups and downs. Unfortunately, millions of people are dealing with similar issues in our country and don't have the resources to fight back like I did. We need to continue supporting them. I'm committed to working with my team at the REFORM Alliance to change these outdated laws and fix our broken criminal justice system."

A Bucks County man has been sentenced to 25 – 50 years for killing his girlfriend last September. 42-year-old Jason Lutley of New Britain pled guilty on Tuesday, 7/23, to third-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, evidence-tampering, and possession of an instrument of crime. Police were called to Lutley's home on the 100 block of Keeley Avenue on September 7th, 2018. They found the body of 46-year-old Colleen Patterson wrapped in a sheet in the back of his 2018 Toyota Highlander SUV parked in the driveway. Prosecutors planned on pursuing the death penalty if the case went to trial.

A Walmart store in Salem County, New Jersey and neighboring buildings in the shopping center have been evacuated after a bomb threat on Wednesday afternoon, 7/24. It happened around 12:30 p.m. at the Pennsville Market Place Shopping Center in the 700 block of South Broadway in Pennsville. K-9 dogs are being used to clear the building. There haven't been any reports of injuries.
