Two Philadelphia Doctors and Daughter Die When Their Private Plane Crashes in MontCo Neighborhood

A married couple and their daughter were killed after a small plane crashed into a Montgomery County neighborhood shortly after takeoff on Thursday morning. It happened around 6:15 a.m. on Minnie Lane near Morris Road in Upper Moreland Township. A single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza propeller plane (N4082S) took off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport at 6:12 a.m. about 9 miles away from the site. The plane was headed to The Ohio State University Airport in Columbus, Ohio. The aircraft crashed into the backyards of several homes along Minnie Lane. It struck a gazebo, a large shed, fences, and several trees before coming to rest in a wooded area. A large area of debris is strewn through the yards. No homes were damaged and no one on the ground was injured. Authorities are looking for surveillance footage from the area that may have captured the crash. "Officers found three persons that were in the aircraft, all three persons were deceased," Upper Moreland Township Police Chief Mike Murphy said.

The victims have been identified as: 60-year-old Dr. Jasvir (Jesse) Khurana, his wife 54-year-old Dr. Divya Khurana, and their 19-year-old daughter Kiran Khurana. They lived in the Penn Valley section of Lower Merion Township. Jasvir worked as a faculty member in the Department of Pathology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He owned and piloted the plane. Divya was a professor of pediatrics and neurology at Drexel University College of Medicine. The couple leaves behind another daughter.

Information from flight tracking site FlightAware shows the plane steadily climbing for the first two minutes after takeoff. At 6:14 a.m., the plane suddenly starts to fall and speed up. Authorities say that no distress call was made from the plane and the plane was not equipped with a black box. Instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions were in effect at Northeast Airport due to overcast skies. The FAA and NTSB will be investigating the crash. Murphy said that they could be on site for a few days. Several roads in the neighborhood are closed off, particularly because of the amount of debris. The cause of the crash in not yet known. A preliminary report from the NTSB can be expected in 10-15 days.
