Atlantic City Mayor Resigns After Pleading Guilty; First DE Vaping Death; Murderer Carjacks in Delco

Atlantic City Mayor Frank Gilliam resigned today, 10/3, effective immediately after pleading guilty in federal court in Camden this morning on wire fraud charges. 49-year-old Gilliam admitted that he stole over $87,000 in donations from a youth nonprofit basketball club he helped form called the Atlantic City Starz from 2013-2018. About half that money, $41,000, was recovered from his home when federal agents searched it last December. Gilliam used that money on personal expenses. Atlantic City Council President Marty Small will be sworn in as mayor on Friday. Gilliam posted $100,000 bond. He will be sentenced on January 7, 2020 and faces up to 20 years in prison. His resignation letter read, "It is with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation as the Mayor of the City of Atlantic City, effective immediately. I would like to apologize to the residents of the great City of Atlantic City who deserve stability and respect. My sincere apologies to each constituent that voted for me and had high hopes in my tenure."

Delaware public health officials have confirmed the first vaping-related death in the state. They say that a person with a history of exposure to vaping died in August after a lengthy hospitalization. The cause of death, age, gender, race, or hometown of the victim have not been released. Officials say that there are 4 other confirmed cases of vaping related illnesses and seven probable. Only 1 of those cases is nicotine-only, while the others involve THC or THC/nicotine.

A convicted murderer that was released from prison in August is back behind bars after an armed carjacking in Delaware County earlier this week. The incident was caught on doorbell cam (see below). 44-year-old Donald Flynn was released on parole after serving 24 years for second-degree murder. The latest incident happened on Monday, 9/30, on the 200 block of Elmwood Avenue in the Woodlyn section of Ridley Township. The video shows a BMW pull into a parking space. Flynn approaches the driver's side armed with a gun. The driver tries to back away, but Flynn holds onto the car, and they back into a concrete barrier. The driver and passenger then get out and run away, while Flynn gets in and steals the car. He ditched it nearby on Taylor Avenue and set the car on fire. Witnesses were able to give police a description and he was caught shortly after. He was taken to the burn unit of Crozer Chester Medical Center for treatment for burns to his neck, wrist, and knuckles. He is charged with robbery of a motor vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats and other related offenses. He faces a minimum of 10 years.
