Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner filed a motion on Friday, 10/4, to drop third-degree murder charges against the man who is accused of fatally stabbing real estate developer Sean Schellenger last year. He wants to keep the voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon charge and also add charges of evidence tampering and obstruction of justice. 22-year-old Michael White is accused of stabbing 37-year-old Schellenger in the back during an altercation on the 1700 block of Chancellor in Rittenhouse Square in July 2018. Schellenger was a passenger of a car stuck in traffic. He had gotten out and walked up to try and alleviate the problem. He was talking with another driver when White, a food delivery person, rode through the scene on his bicycle. White interjected himself in the argument. At one point he pulled out a knife. Schellenger lunged at him and White stabbed him in the back. White says he acted in self defense. Linda Schellenger, the victim's mother, received a phone call from Krasner notifying her of the motion. She is disappointed in the decision. A judge still has to accept Krasner's motion. Jury selection in the trial begins on Monday. He faces 10 - 20 years if convicted on voluntary manslaughter.

Maureen Faulker, widow of slain Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner, wants Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to recuse himself from a possible Mumia Abu Jamal retrial. "Mr. Krasner, I am asking you to voluntarily recuse yourself and anyone else in the District Attorney's office from my husband's case immediately," Faulkner said in front of the DA's office with around 100 supporters. She sent the DA a letter pointing to several people in his office, including his wife, that have ties to the case or have represented Abu Jamal in the past. The DA's office denies the conflict of interest.

Students of Benjamin Franklin High School and Science Leadership Academy will not be returning to the school building they share in the Spring Garden section after asbestos was discovered last week. The students were out of school this past week as abatement and remediation work began. The predicted timeframe expanded past Monday and Tuesday, until the students got the whole week off. Next week, students will be moved to new buildings. Two town halls for parents will be held on Monday - 9 a.m. for Ben Franklin High School and 5:30 p.m. for Science Leadership Academy. The temporary closure is indefinite, until construction is adequately finished to ensure safety.
