The Philadelphia Phillies have fired Gabe Kapler after two seasons as manager. Kapler led the team to a 161-163 overall record. This year's 81-81 record was below expectations for a club that added several All-Stars to the roster. Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton made the decision to move on from Kapler after talking with many people in and out of the organization. He said, "Several years ago, I promised our loyal fans that I would do everything in my power to bring a world championship team to our city. I will never waver from that commitment." General Manager Matt Klentak said in a statement, "On behalf of everyone in our Baseball Operations department, I want to thank Kap for his tireless commitment to the Phillies over the last two years." Gabe Kapler thanked the Phillies saying, "I am grateful to John, the Buck family, Andy, Matt and the entire Phillies organization for giving me the opportunity to lead this team for the last two years. I have tremendous respect for this organization, this franchise and this city," said Kapler. "We came into 2019 with very high hopes. We fell short of those, and that responsibility lies with me. The next Phillies manager will inherit a team of talented, dedicated and committed players. There has been nothing more fulfilling in my professional career than the opportunity to work with the players on this team. I will forever value the relationships I developed with them."

A possible gas explosion shook a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood on Thursday afternoon and left a twin home damaged. It happened around 12:45 p.m. on the 4400 block of Pearson Ave. Neighbors saw a flash and heard a boom. Some say they felt a shake. The roof of the home looks like it was blown off and the side wall was blown out. Gas service to the block was shut off. Renovation work was being done to the unit. Officials are trying to determine the exact cause of the blast. The entire house may end up being condemned. No one was injured.

Brandywine Valley SPCA says they rescued 85 cats and a dog from a home in Phoenixville. Authorities had deemed the Chester County house unfit for human occupancy. The BVSPCA spent two days to remove all the animals, including one dead cat. They said, "The animals were living in deplorable conditions, including several layers of feces covering the floor. The animals range in condition from good to poor." The dog was underweight, had a skin condition that left it half hairless, and had dental disease. Many of the cats were well-adjusted and are currently up to adoption. Charges are expected against the residents.
