REC Philly opened the doors to its brand new 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Center City on December 1st. It could be described as a co-op for creatives, a space that acts like a club membership that gives creatives access to the resources and opportunities to build and sustain a career. Beyond the state-of-the-art physical studios and technical tools now at one's fingertips, simply being part of the community is just as valuable an asset. I was sitting in the co-working area last week and saw a number of different people from different corners of the industry walk through and interact. This place is going to be like the Union League for the creative set.

REC Philly is built for every musician, vocalist, producer, songwriter, engineer, artist, designer, painter, illustrator, photographer, videographer, podcaster, dancer, choreographer, entrepreneur and creator.

The REC (Resources for Every Creator) dream started several years ago with co-founders Dave Silver and Will Toms, who were throwing parties and shows with local artists around Temple University. They wanted to find a way to continue to work with and help these artists, keep them in this city, and guide them further in their careers. The idea for a type of creative incubator was born. After several years of iterations and a proof of concept at the much smaller first studios in North Philadelphia, REC Philly has been able to raise enough to build out the dream. The new space is highly visible at 9th and Market inside the brand new Fashion District mall.

The store front acts as a cafe and retail space selling members' products. You can buy apparel, artwork, music, coffee, salads, and wraps. Members can enter the space here during mall hours or through an outside entrance when the mall is closed. Creativity doesn't stop at 8 p.m. Three levels of memberships give you a different number of 'credits' each month that you can use towards booking the various studios. Additional credits can be bought as well. Coaching and guidance sessions are also included in the bigger packages. All members get access to the co-working space daily as well as special events, etc.

The studios include four recording studios, design studio, visual lab, podcasting studio, live room, editing room, movement room. Equipment for each studio can be checked out and used in house. (microphones, cables, stands, etc. ) Different studios cost a different number of credits per hour. There is a stage that will be used for live events and is also available for rehearsal. There are also two conference rooms, a kitchen, meditation rooms, and the large co-working space. That space converts into a 250 person venue for special events.

Members have access to an app that allows them to book the studios, check out all the events scheduled for the space, as well as search the member directory for other members for possible collaborations on projects. A singer may need an engineer or producer to help record, or a photographer may be looking for a model. There is also an exclusive job and opportunities board.

Membership start at $49 per month and go up to $149 per month. You can find more information at: https://www.recphilly.com. Schedule a tour to see the space.

This Saturday, December 14th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. is the Grand Opening. It is free and open to the public. For more information go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-rec-room-grand-opening-creator-day-tickets-83395322655
