South Philly Home Explosion, 1 Presumed Dead; 3yo Shoots Own Hand; Deadly Snow Squall Pileup

Two people were trapped, one is presumed dead, after a row home exploded causing a multi-alarm fire in South Philadelphia on Thursday morning, 12/19. It happened around 11:40 a.m. on the 1400 block of South 8th Street near Reed Street. There was an explosion in a home in the middle of the block causing the house to collapse. Adjacent homes also sustained significant damage. Multiple homes were engulfed in flames. The entire block was evacuated and power/gas was shut off to every home affecting 150 customers. The fire hit three alarms bringing in over 50 apparatus and 120 firefighters. It was brought under control at 2:45 p.m. One woman was rescued from the rubble and taken to the hospital. Her condition is unknown. The other person is still missing. No firefighters were injured. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Red Paw Emergency Relief Team are assisted those displaced by the fire.

UPDATE: The fire and explosion destroyed three homes and damaged two others. Two people are missing and presumed dead. Firefighters have not been able to recover the bodies and called off the search for this evening. One person is still unaccounted for.

A 3-year-old Philadelphia boy is recovering after he was shot in the hand on Thursday morning, 12/19. It happened around 11 a.m. on the 7100 block of Ditman Street in the Tacony section. Police say that the boy grabbed the weapon after his father opened a safe on the floor and then accidentally shot himself in the left hand. He was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in stable condition. Police are investigating.

A snow squall in central Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon, 12/18, caused a multi-vehicle wreck along I-80 killing two people and injuring dozens of others. It happened around 1 p.m. on westbound I-80 in White Deer Township. The sudden snow band caused blinding and slick conditions leading to a chain reaction crash. Two people died from the crash. Area hospitals received almost 50 patients. The highway was closed for 34 miles in both directions. The eastbound lanes reopened 5 hours later. The westbound lanes were still closed this morning as tow trucks continued to remover 15-20 cars and trucks from the pileup.
