Are you an artist, musician, band member, singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, engineer, promoter, venue owner, or other music industry person in the Philadelphia area? Do you support fair compensation for working musicians, dedicated funding to invest in Philadelphia's music economy, and the establishment of a permanent music office charged with supporting the music industry? Do you support the Philadelphia Music Industry?

UPDATE: “ Due to new procedures in City Council regarding the coronavirus, tomorrow’s Music Industry Task Force Hearing has been postponed. We apologize for the inconvenience and will let you know the new date as soon as possible. Thank you.”

Attend the City Council Music Industry Task Force Hearing! This Thursday, March 12, 1 p.m. at Philadelphia City Hall, Council Chambers Room 401. You'll need to enter through the Visitor's Entrance in the northeast corner of City Hall. Bring your ID and you'll go through security. SEE https://creativephl.org/mitf for more information. It is important that members of the music community show up in strength at the hearing to show lawmakers that Philadelphia musicians are a contingent worthy of voting for and allocating resources towards. The task force will be presenting recommendations to City Council to establish a permanent Philadelphia Music Commission, dedicated funding to invest in the music economy, and fair compensation for working musicians.

The Philadelphia Music Industry Task Force has been meeting regularly since August 2017. It was inspired by Councilman-at-large David Oh and established by City Council. The MITF issued a report in August 2019 with nine recommended actions.

1) Establish a centralized, permanent Philadelphia Music Office or Commission to continue the work initiated by the Music Industry Task Force.

2) Market the strengths of Philadelphia’s rich musical history, and the current boom of music venues and artists.

3) Promote Philadelphia music in the city’s transportation hubs such as Philadelphia International Airport and 30th Street Station.

4) Develop an awareness campaign for the fair compensation for working musicians.

5) Establish Performing Arts Priority Loading and Unloading Zones (temporary parking areas at certain concert performance venues that will allow artists to quickly load in and out of the venues without receiving parking tickets).

6) Identify sources of funding for sustained, dedicated efforts to grow Philadelphia’s music economy.

7) Create hubs for music and concert promotion material distribution.

8) Encourage music performance venues to cater to all ages.

9) Utilize the City’s zoning and community development policies to benefit the music industry.
