Philadelphia Colleges Closing, Open Online; NJ 7-Eleven Sells Bad Spray; Sports Taking Big Hits

A growing list of Philadelphia area universities and colleges are altering their schedules and halting in-person classes and activities in response to the coronavirus COVID-19. Many are extending spring break and using that time for faculty to prepare for remote learning. Villanova, Penn State, Princeton, Delaware and Swarthmore will begin virtual learning in the next week or two. Administrators at each of these schools will reassess the situation sometime in April and decide whether to continue the online classes or return to campus.

Temple, Penn, West Chester, Rutgers, and Widener have decided to cancel in-person classes for the rest of the spring semester entirely and move completely to remote learning. Each school also has different policies for leaving residence halls and dormitories and what services may or may not be available on campus. Students and parents should check with your school's website for more specific information about each institution's response. The list of schools is certainly going to grow in the coming days.

An owner of a 7-Eleven store in New Jersey has been arrested after one child was severely burned and three others were injured by a "spray sanitizer" sold at the store. 47-year-old Manisha Bharade of Woodbridge is charged with endangering the welfare of children and deceptive business practices. Police in River Vale became aware of the situation when pictures of the boy with burns to his arms and legs were posted to social media. Bharade mixed commercially available foaming sanitizer, which wasn't meant for resale, with water and packaged the bottles in her store in River Vale. A chemical reaction caused the burns on the three 10-year-olds and one 11-year-old. State officials have opened an investigation into the store's practices regarding the sale and promotion of health and sanitation products during the coronavirus outbreak. If you bought one of these bottles, contact the River Vale Police Department.

A Gloucester Township police officer has been found guilty of smacking a 13-year-old girl in the face on Wednesday, 3/11. Officer John Flinn was convicted of official misconduct Wednesday afternoon. The incident was caught on body camera. Flinn was handcuffing the girl at a group home when it happened.

Sports
The NCAA announced that March Madness Tournament games will be played without fans. Only essential staff and limited family will be attendance. That is for both Men's and Women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments starting next week. The policy holds for all NCAA winter championships including track and field, swimming and diving, and gymnastics.

The remainder of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City will be played with a restricted attendance policy. Only essential staff, media, and limited family members will be allowed to attend.

#2 Villanova Wildcats plays #10 DePaul at 7 p.m. on FS1

The NBA has suspended the regular season after a player on the Utah Jazz preliminarily tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. The player is reportedly All-Star center Rudy Gobert. The test result came back just before the game between the Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night, 3/11. That game was immediately suspended. All other games in progress throughout the league on Wednesday night were played out. On Monday, 3/9, during a media availability, Gobert made it a point to touch all of the microphones and recorders of the press in attendance, even though the press members themselves were seated 6-8 feet away.

The Ivy League has canceled all spring sports.
