Philadelphia School Reform Closing 8 Schools, Federal Charges For Phila Airport Fireworks Smuggler

Members of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission voted to close eight of the schools recommended in the District's Facilities Master Plan Thursday night.

The schools are Harrison Elementary School, George Pepper Middle School, Fitzsimons High School, Philadelphia High School for Business and Technology, Rhodes High School, Sheridan West Academy, Charles R. Drew Elementary School and William Levering Elementary School. Also approved was the relocation of the AMY Northwest program.

Joseph Picklo of Dallas, PA has been federally charged after he attempted to board a plane with fireworks and a suspicious container in Philadelphia Thursday morning. He told authorities that he was “blowing stuff up” over the weekend and forgot he had the items in his possession.

More charges are possible as the investigation continues, and if charged, Picklo could face up to 10-years in prison.

Several students and a driver were injured in a school bus crash in Galloway Township, New Jersey Thursday afternoon. At least 15 students from suffered minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals. The adult driver of the SUV was seriously injured and flown by a medical helicopter to Cooper University Hospital. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
