NJ Gov. Orders Internet/Voice Can't Be Turned Off; ChesCo Woman Stabs Mother; Glen Mills PEMA Site

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order on Monday, 4/13, prohibiting cable and telecommunications providers from terminating Internet and voice services due to nonpayment until 30 days after the current public health emergency has ended. Also, a cable or telecommunications provider may only downgrade or otherwise reduce of the quality of residential internet or voice services, incur a fees or charge for late or otherwise untimely payments, or charge a fee for reconnections if they are acting on a policy approved in writing by the NJ Board of Public Utilities. Any Internet or voice service that was disconnected after March 16 due to nonpayment must be reconnected.

"Most of our service providers voluntarily took these steps, in accordance with FCC policy, to protect their customers during this difficult time, and we are grateful for their partnership," said Governor Murphy. "However, these policies have been implemented inconsistently among companies, so today we are prohibiting the termination of Internet and voice services due to nonpayment during this time. Our children need Internet access for remote learning, our workforce needs the resources to telework, and families need to be able to keep each other informed. It is critical for our New Jersey residents to maintain these connections and not have their ability to communicate with the outside world severed."

A Chester County woman is accused of stabbing her mother multiple times inside their home on Easter Sunday. 30-year-old Alexis Wilson is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possessing the instrument of crime and other related offenses. Police arrived at the home on the 200 block of Highland Avenue in Downingtown for the report of an assault. They found Wilson holding a large silver knife and her mother face down on the living room floor. There was blood on the wall and floor. The victim was stabbed 10 times in her neck, back, and cheek. She was rushed to Paoli Hospital and placed in a medically induced coma. Wilson was arrested and is awaiting a preliminary hearing in Chester County Prison.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is moving resources from a medical station set up at Glen Mills Schools in Delaware County to a new site in East Stroudsburg, Monroe County. The Delco site was originally built to house non-coronavirus COVID-19 patients that did not need critical care in order to free up beds in regular hospitals. It would also have served as a last resort for COVID-19 patients if there was no other place to house them. The Pennsylvania Department of Health and National Guard will begin breaking down the medical station Tuesday morning. 100 beds will be left at Glen Mills as a regional reserve. The location of the site in East Stroudsburg has not been announced.
