PA Driving Safety Laws changing April 2nd; Drivers and Bikes in City Take Note

The new Pennsylvania driver safety laws affect both the four wheeled motorized vehicles just as much as the two wheeled human powered kind.

From the website drive safe PA:
---
Effective April 2, 2012, motorists must allow at least four feet between your vehicle and a bicycle for the vehicle to safely pass the bicycle. When safe to do so, it is legal to cross the center double yellow line if necessary to provide the required four feet when passing a bicycle.

Also, no turn (right or left) by the driver of a motor vehicle shall interfere with a bicyclist proceeding straight on a roadway or shoulder.
---

You must give a 4-foot buffer when passing or turning in front of a bike. The law gives bikes riding along the right side of the roadway, either in a lane or shoulder, more breathing room on the road than before. You also have to yield to a bicycle if it is going straight and not "right hook" them or left turn in front. However, bicyclists still must remember that when they are in the road they must also obey traffic laws as other vehicles. That includes stop signs, traffic lights, etc. Someone on a bike can be stopped and ticketed if they for example ride through an intersection against a red light.
