Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced the creation of the Commonwealth Civilian Coronavirus Corps, "a public service initiative that will support efforts this fall to increase testing and contact tracing and provide critical new job opportunities in the public health sector." This work will allow Pennsylvanians to effectively monitor and respond to new cases and quantify mitigation efforts. It will help phased reopening efforts while ensuring that the health care system does not become overwhelmed and that the transmission of disease continues to slow. It will also provide employment opportunities.

"Our highest priority remains protecting public health and safety, but we must also look ahead to see how we can address future needs. To reopen our economy to its maximum potential, we will need to boost our ability to contain this highly transmissible virus," Wolf said. "The Commonwealth Civilian Coronavirus Corps will serve as a public service program that will expand our ability to conduct contact tracing and testing and mobilize Pennsylvanians to contain COVID-19."

A DUI driver in a stolen car who was reversing on the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) early Wednesday morning, 5/6, caused a deadly, fiery crash when they collided with a tractor-trailer. It happened around 2:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Girard Ave exit. The stolen 2018 Toyota Yaris missed the exit and was reversing when it hit a semi truck. The truck burst into flames. Parts of the truck and its load of produce spilled over an overpass onto Sweetbriar Drive below. The 54-year-old driver, a Florida man, was killed. I-76 was closed until 10 a.m. causing traffic backups for hours. Martin Luther King Drive was temporarily reopened to traffic to alleviate some of the congestion. 19-year-old Zamir Abdul-Johnson of Philadelphia was taken into custody. Police say he will be charged with homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, recklessly endangering another person, driving under the influence and other related offenses.

A man is in critical condition after being shot while in a parking garage in Northern Liberties on Wednesday afternoon, 5/6. It happened around 4:30 p.m. near the ACME located at 2nd Street and Girard Ave. The man was shot once in the head. He was taken to Temple University Hospital. No word on what led up to the shooting. No arrests have been made. The investigation is underway.
