Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced the creation of the COVID-19 Recovery Office on Thursday, 5/14, which will be in charge of recovering federal aid for Philadelphia and help guiding the city's pandemic recovery efforts. "A public health and economic crisis of this magnitude requires a thoughtful and coordinated approach," said Mayor Jim Kenney. "With the formation of the COVID-19 Recovery Office, we will ensure that our City government is recovering its costs and maximizing the effectiveness of the numerous federal and state grants coming to Philadelphia." Deputy Finance Director Sarah de Wolf and Deputy Managing Director Chris Rupe will be co-chairing the office. "The COVID-19 Recovery Office works to ensure that Philadelphia recovers from the pandemic in a way that: Protects public health and safety; Is fiscally responsible for the City and its taxpayers; Addresses the most pressing community hardships caused by the pandemic; Puts Philadelphians back to work; Helps businesses in hard-hit communities reopen and thrive; Our aim is a more equitable and prosperous Philadelphia post-recovery."

President Donald Trump visited an Owens & Minor distribution center in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County, near Allentown on Thursday afternoon, 5/14. The warehouse is a distribution center for medical supplies including personal protective equipment PPE used by medical and other frontline workers. He took the opportunity to announce a plan to replenish the national stockpile. The goal of the Strategic National Stockpile 2.0 initiative is to build up three months' worth of supplies such as ventilators, masks, gloves, gowns, etc. Many of the contracts to create those supplies are being awarded to American companies instead of foreign manufacturers like those in China. Trump says the stockpile should be refilled by the fall.
