A man suspected of DUI is being charged with murder after a crash earlier this week killed a man and an unborn child. It happened before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, 5/13, on the 4900 block of Whitaker Avenue near Penway Street in Lawncrest. Police say that 42-year-old Charles Smith was driving a gold Acura sedan with a female passenger on Whitaker Ave when he crashed into a Nissan SUV. The SUV hit two empty, parked cars and struck a telephone pole. The 30-year-old male driver of the SUV died at the scene. The 30-year-old female pregnant passenger of the SUV was taken to the hospital. She was five months pregnant and had to be extricated from the vehicle. Her baby did not survive. She suffered injuries to her abdomen and legs and remains in critical condition. Smith and his female passenger both appeared to be impaired at the scene. They were not seriously injured. Smith is charged with murder, homicide by vehicle while DUI, among other related charges. The 30-year-old male victim has been identified as Anthony O'Connor of Jamison, Bucks County.

A drag race in Philadelphia's Feltonville neighborhood on Saturday night, 5/16, ended in a shooting which then led to a police chase and car crash with multiple suspects fleeing on foot. It started around 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of G Street and Hunting Park Avenue. The 29-year-old victim was shot in the head by someone inside a 2003 silver Ford Crown Victoria after a car race on city streets. The victim had been taken to Temple University Hospital. Police saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspects' with four people inside near Butler Street and Aramingo Avenue. When they turned on their lights, the vehicle fled onto I-95 North. Police chased the vehicle until it eventually crashed on the 4700 block of Oakmont Street in Holmesburg. The occupants fled on foot. Police are searching for four Hispanic males. A 35-year-old man was shot and injured on Saturday night, 5/16, in Lawncrest. It happened around 9 p.m. on the 500 block of Adams Avenue near Foulkrod Street. The victim was struck once in the leg. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. No arrests have been made.

Uber has introduced a variety of new rules beginning on Monday, May 18, intended to keep both riders, drivers, and Uber Eats delivery drivers safe during the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Both drivers and passengers will be required to wear a mask or face covering while traveling inside the vehicle. Drivers have to take a selfie wearing the mask and answer a safety checklist in order to get online and start receiving rides. Passengers also have to answer a checklist which includes a question about wearing a mask. No passenger can ride in the front seat and UberX capacity will be reduced. Drivers and riders can cancel a trip without penalty if the other party is not wearing a mask. There will be an option added to feedback forms to be able to report if someone wasn't wearing a mask. Drivers will either be sent cleaning supplies or will be reimbursed for the purchase of supplies. They will be responsible for frequent sanitizing of their vehicle. The mask requirement will be reassessed at the end of June.
