Virgin Mary tops Lourdes Hospital Camden, Mumia Abu-Jamal Appeal Denied, Battleship New Jersey Rally

Today crews lifted the top three sections of the statue of the Virgin Mary back on top of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden. The statue has stood atop the hospital for more than six decades but was damaged last August by the unusual earthquake felt up and down the east coast. It was brought down by crane in November when cracks were discovered. $65,000 in funds were raised to cover the insurance deductible from all across Camden. The statue sits on the highest point in the city and is symbolic to many in the city. Workers added an illuminated halo to the head to complete the work.

Former death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal has lost his last legal appeal. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has rejected a challenge regarding forensic evidence in his case. Abu-Jamal spent nearly 30 years on death row while pursuing numerous legal appeals. On March 26, the state Supreme Court upheld a lower court's denial of the forensics claim. A previous appeal led a judge to order a new sentencing hearing. Instead, prosecutors in December agreed to allow him to serve a life sentence.

Supporters of the Battleship New Jersey museum held a rally today in support of keeping the vessel on the Delaware riverfront in Camden, NJ. A North Jersey group has engaged in a letter-writing and publicity campaign, claiming the museum is in violation of its Navy contract and wants to move the New Jersey north to a new home in Liberty State Park, in northern New Jersey. Supporters of the current location plan to put up a fight if necessary. The Battleship New Jersey belongs in the City of Camden and South Jersey,” Camden mayor Dana Redd told the crowd, “Will you join us in this fight?”

In Sports, Phillies play their last Spring Training game tonight against the Pirates at Citizen's Bank Park before heading to Pittsburgh for the start of the season on Thursday. Ilya Bryzgalov returns to goal tonight for the Flyers against the Rangers after missing 3 games with chip fracture in his foot.

A few clouds this evening, otherwise mostly clear skies. Temperatures dipping through the 50's this evening, low of 48 overnight.
