| Widespread Looting and Destruction in Philadelphia Overshadow Message of Justice for George Floyd |

On the second day of unrest in Philadelphia, widespread looting and destruction took over the city starting Sunday mid-afternoon. There were peaceful demonstrations in Center City calling for justice in the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd killed at the hands of police, but opportunists took advantage of the entire situation across the rest of city. Those peaceful demonstrations were held at the Octavius Catto statue on the southside of City Hall.
Big box as well as mom & pop retail locations, closed due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, were smashed and broken into by looters in Port Richmond, Kensington, West Philly, North Philly, Upper Darby, and North East Philly. Law enforcement tried to keep up with the break-ins as looters went from block to block in neighborhoods looking for retail vulnerabilities and new pockets of violence popped up in other areas.
Center City streets, attacked on Saturday night, had been shut down as well as SEPTA transportation. Most of the looting on Sunday took place outside of Center City. Several fires have been set, both in structures and police vehicles. There were also some confrontations between police and people, but the groups have not faced up today as much as yesterday. Most people would run when police arrived to a location on Sunday. Police have been hit with bricks and Molotov cocktails, though. Police have been arresting looters and now others for breaking curfew.
- Philadelphia is under curfew from 6 p.m. Sunday, 5/31, until 6 a.m. Monday, 6/1.
- Center City is shut down from Vine Street to South Street and the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River, except for residents, business owners, or essential workers.
- SEPTA has shutdown the entire transportation system from 6 p.m. Sunday, 5/31, until at least 6 a.m. Monday, 6/1.
- Philadelphia businesses were ordered to close at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, 5/31.
- The Pennsylvania National Guard has been activated and will be in Philadelphia starting Sunday night, 5/31. |
