Jim Herr, founder of Herr Foods Inc., died last night at his home in West Nottingham, PA. He was years old. He is survived by his wife Miriam of 65 years, 5 children, 20 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Herr had contracted pneumonia last summer. This past December he developed a more serious pneumonia that made it difficult to swallow food or liquid. He passed surrounded by family.

Herr founded Herr Food Inc., maker of Herr's line of snack foods, in 1946 with the help of his then fiancé, Miriam Hershey. At that time it was just a small potato chip manufacturing business with $30 in sales a week. Herr's is now available in 240 different snack varieties, on shelves in most states and internationally, and does over $100 million in annual sales. The company, based in Nottingham, PA, is the third largest chip company in the United States.

Jim Herr was born in Lancaster, PA, on August 6, 1924. He is survived by two brothers and one sister, preceded in death by another sister. Herr stayed involved in his Chester County community, frequently giving back and promoting economic and civic development. He served on numerous boards dedicated to his faith, philanthropy, and free enterprise. Over the years he was recognized for his business acumen, and Herr himself championed the small and independent businessman.

Jim stepped aside from his role as Chairman of the Board in 2005, giving the seat to his son Ed, though he retained the title of Founder and sat on the Board of Directors.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the James S. Herr Foundation, P.O. Box 300, Nottingham, PA 19362, 610-932-9330, which supports evangelism around the world.

Details for public services next weekend will be made available at: www.herrs.com or call 1-800-344-3777
