Phillies Cancel Citizens Bank Park Activities; Kenny Appoints Act. Director; Streets Hiring Trashmen

The Philadelphia Phillies canceled all activity at Citizens Bank Park until further notice on Thursday, 7/30. Two members of the Phillies' staff have tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. One person is a coach and the other is a member of the home clubhouse staff. A member of the visiting clubhouse staff had tested positive earlier this week. No players have tested positive so far, but there is a 2-week incubation period. The team was scheduled to play a weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays starting with a traditional double header on Saturday, August 1 in South Philadelphia. Those games have now been postponed. This all stems from an outbreak on the Miami Marlins that were in town last weekend.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney intends to appoint first deputy managing director Tumar Alexander to be the acting managing director come September. Current Managing Director Brian Abernathy will be resigning on September 4. "In the meantime, the review of the managing director's office is still underway, and determining the best structure of the City's operating departments is the mayor's current focus," a spokesperson said. Alexander is being considered for the permanent position as well. The position is in charge of the city's operating departments and day-to-day functions. It is usually a behind-the-scenes job, but was thrust into the public view this past year due to the pandemic and civil unrest.

Trash pickup in Philadelphia has been seriously delayed due to the pandemic and garbage has been piling up on curbs around the city. A combination of workers calling out sick, workers catching coronavirus COVID-19, and others quarantining from having close contacts has left the workforce depleted. The Streets Department plans to hire 120 temporary workers to catch back up and clear the streets. It could take four weeks to hire and train workers.
