Small Business Saturday in Philadelphia, 'I Shopped Philly,' Support Local Businesses

Today, 11/28, is Small Business Saturday, and it is more important than ever to shop local and support your neighborhood businesses. The day was started in 2010 during the previous recession as a way to focus holiday shoppers' spending on their own communities and help the economic recovery. The current coronavirus COVID-19 economic crisis has put many of our neighborhood businesses on the brink of closing. We must take the opportunity to support them directly or risk losing them forever.

"It is critically important that all of us choose to help Philadelphia recover by just spending some of our money on our holiday list, right here in Philadelphia," Visit Philadelphia CEO Jeff Guaracino said. "You could do it in person, like here at Christmas Village, or you can do it online, to support a local business. We want you to show your pride." Many Philadelphia stores are handing out "I Shopped Philly" stickers, similar to the "I Voted" sticker. They were both designed by Temple University student Katie Fish. (see sticker below).

There are many terrific local shopping corridors in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Manayunk, South Street, Germantown, Chestnut Hill, East Passayunk, Media, Doylestown, New Hope, West Chester, and Ardmore to name a few. You can shop in person at local shops or stay home and shop from their online stores. You can also buy their gift cards to be used later. Support local restaurants and order takeout. Donate to your local venue or theater. These cultural institutions were the first to close and will be the last to open. Many will not survive unless they get major support.
