Theft From Fallen Firefighters’ Benefit Caught on Video

On Friday night at SmokeEaters Pub on Frankford Ave in the Northeast, a Benefit to support the families of the two fallen firefighters was being held. Donations were being collected, the bartenders were offering their tips, and a raffle was going to be held for three gift baskets donated from local businesses. All the money collected would go directly to the families of Daniel Sweeney and Robert Neary.

However, someone decided to commit a callous act during the casual evening. Instead of going to the restroom, this individual slipped downstairs to the basement of the bar. He proceeded to slice open the gift baskets that were going to be raffled off and stuff the contents into his pockets. He made off with whatever he could carry in all of his pockets.

Brian Haughton, the owner, said, “We don’t know how much we raised but we could have raised more except for this scumbag.”

The entire crime was caught on video tape. A $1,000 reward is being offered to catch this thief.

“Neither one of these firefighters is in the ground yet and someone stole their money and it really angers me a lot,” Haughton said.

Both Neary and Sweeney were laid to rest Saturday as hundreds of fellow firefighters who came from across North America paid respects and the entire city saluted our heroes.

There will always be someone despicable enough to prey on any opportunity.

The suspect is described as a White male, 40 years-of-age, 5’10”-6’, 280-300lbs, short dark hair, wearing light colored pants and t-shirt with a light colored, short sleeve button shirt over top.

If you see the male, police say do not approach him, call 911 immediately.

You can also submit a tip by calling (215) 686-TIPS (8477).

Here is the surveillance video from the basement of the bar:
