No Snow Day for Philly School Kids?; Charges Filed on Man Shot By Cop; Store Owner Shot By Robber

Despite the forecast for a major winter storm hitting our region on Wednesday into Thursday with significant snow totals in Philadelphia, there will be no snow days for children in the Philadelphia School District. It has been over 650 days since the last time the city has seen even an inch of snow, but as it is piling up outside tomorrow, children will be continuing their virtual lessons inside. "Considering the world that we're in right now, there is no reason to have a snow day because we are all learning remotely," said School District of Philadelphia spokesperson Monica Lewis. Even area school districts who do have in-person classes scheduled this week are saying that if it snows, they'll just switch to virtual learning for the day instead of calling off school completely. So many schools now have the capability to conduct class remotely that the traditional 'snow day' may be a thing of the past.

Charges have been filed against a man who was shot and injured by police last week in Feltonville while armed with a knife. 50-year-old Jose Cerda is charged with assault of a law enforcement officer, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person. It happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday, 12/9, on the 4700 block of Rorer Street. Police arrived to find Cerda at the door of a home. He was armed with a 10-inch knife and started coming towards officers. The police gave repeated commands to drop the knife as they backed away. The officers used a Taser three different times to stop Cerda but it was not effective and he kept advancing. That is when one officer fired three times, hitting Cerda once in the chest. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

A corner store owner is recovering after being shot trying to stop a robbery at his business in Kensington on Monday evening, 12/14. It happened around 7 p.m. at the Express One market on the 2000 block of East Allegheny Avenue. The 51-year-old suspect entered the store and pointed a gun at the 36-year-old store owner. The owner grabbed the gun. During the struggle, the owner was shot four times in the stomach and once in the left arm. The suspect was shot in his hand. Employees and customers held the suspect until police arrived. Both the owner and the suspect were taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition. The suspect was arrested and the weapon was recovered.
