Two Dead in Reading Fire; 75yo Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run; 36yo Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run

Two people are dead after a two-alarm fire in Berks County early Sunday morning, 1/3. It happened around midnight on the 1200 block of Chestnut Street in Reading. Heavy flames could be seen coming from the front of the row home. It took 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. Firefighters found a woman and teen girl inside while searching the building. A third person made it out safely. The fire was contained to the single home and did not spread to others. The fire marshal is investigating the cause.

Philadelphia Police have arrested a man in connection to a fatal hit-and-run accident in Kensington on Saturday night, 1/2. It happened around 7 p.m. on Allegheny Avenue near B Street. A 75-year-old woman was crossing the street when she was struck by a maroon Honda Civic traveling westbound on Allegheny Ave. The driver left the scene but later returned. 29-year-old Hector Waldemar Vazquez Mendez was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle. The woman was taken to Temple University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A 36-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in North Philadelphia early Sunday morning, 1/3. It happened around 1 a.m. at American Street and Lehigh Avenue in the Fairhill neighborhood. The victim was struck by an older model red pickup truck. The vehicle fled fled westbound on Lehigh Avenue and the northbound on 5th Street. The man was taken to Temple University Hospital.

Sports
Villanova Men's Basketball resumed basketball activities on Sunday, 1/3. The program was paused on December 27 after head coach Jay Wright and an unidentified staff member tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. Jay Wright was able to attend meetings virtually throughout the past week. He is expected to return for the Wildcats next game on Tuesday, 1/5, at DePaul. Saturday's, 1/2, postponed game against Xavier has been rescheduled to 1/13.
